WHY I WRITE

More than just words on a page, Maria writes as a bridge between generations. Discover the mission behind her work.

Why I Write...

People often ask why I write so many books, across so many different subjects. The answer is both simple and deeply personal.

I write because life has taught me that every experience, whether joyful, challenging, or unexpected, contains lessons worth sharing. Writing allows me to reflect on those lessons and to pass them forward in the hope that they may help others navigate their own journeys.

But beyond the ideas, the research, and the curiosity that inspire my work, there is another reason that lives quietly in my heart. I am writing to my family. I am writing for husband, Stephen Ellis, my sons, Michael Stephen and his lovely wife Dominique, and for Thomas Wesley and his lovely wife Kathryn. Watching them build their own lives, careers, and families has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Their journeys remind me that each generation carries forward the dreams, values, and wisdom of those who came before them.

I also write for my grandchildren, Maven Rose and Phoenix, whose young lives represent the beautiful promise of the future. When I think about the world they will inherit, I feel a deep desire to leave behind meaningful ideas, reflections, and stories that may one day encourage them to live with courage, compassion, and curiosity.

My writing is also inspired by the love and connection of my extended family. I write with gratitude for my brother Sergio, my brother Francisco, and my sister Zulema, and for the families they have built. Our shared history, our memories, and the bonds that unite us remind me that family is one of life’s greatest gifts.

In many ways, each book I write is a small piece of a larger legacy collection of thoughts, experiences, and hopes for the generations that follow. If my books help someone discover a new idea, find strength during a difficult moment, or feel inspired to pursue their own dreams, then the effort of writing has served its purpose. Because in the end, writing is not only about words on a page.

It is about sharing wisdom, preserving stories, and leaving behind something that continues to give long after we are gone. And if my work can contribute in even a small way to the lives of those I love—and to readers around the world—then I will feel that the journey of writing has been a gift worth giving.
